DIATOMIC

Branding storytelling for digital innovation

THE BRIEF

Diatomic is part of Digital Birmingham, an initiative driving innovation and transformation across the West Midlands. When they first launched, they needed a strong visual identity that matched their ambition, something that felt modern, credible, and capable of representing Birmingham on an international stage.

I was brought in to design the initial brand identity, establishing Diatomic’s look and feel from the ground up, logo, colours, typography, and graphic style. Once the brand was in place, my role evolved to include creative storytelling, including designing and producing an animated film to showcase Diatomic’s Digital Twin project to global audiences.

THE VISION

The goal was to create a brand that reflected both innovation and integrity, a clean, corporate identity with enough edge to stand out in the tech and smart cities space.

The logo design drew inspiration from Birmingham’s skyline and digital geometry, combining architectural lines with fluid motion to symbolise connection and transformation. The colour palette, deep navy, teal, and coral, balanced professionalism with warmth, giving the brand flexibility across everything from reports to event displays.

When it came to the Digital Twin film, the vision was to make complex technology feel accessible and engaging. The film needed to communicate how Birmingham’s digital twin could drive smarter, more sustainable cities, without losing the human story behind it. Through a mix of motion graphics, animation, and storytelling, the video positioned Diatomic as a leader in using digital innovation for real-world change.

THE RESULTS

The new brand identity gave Diatomic a clear and consistent visual foundation, one that now runs across their website, presentations, event materials, and international marketing campaigns.

The Digital Twin video became a key piece of content for Diatomic’s international outreach, showcased at global conferences, including Birmingham Tech Week. It helped demystify the technology and highlight Birmingham’s role as a pioneer in urban innovation, supporting partnerships with cities such as Ulsan, South Korea.

Together, the brand and film helped position Diatomic as a trusted and forward-thinking voice in digital transformation, representing Birmingham and the West Midlands as a centre for smart, sustainable, and inclusive innovation.
